Macao was a  former Portuguese colony and has been returned under the jurisdiction of the Peoples Republic of China since 1997.  It enjoys its own civil and judicial system under the Basic Law  as well as significant autonomy together with its own currency : the Macao Pataca (MOP).  The Civil system of law is used in Macao, with  its beautiful fusion of Chinese and Portuguese history being well preserved.  A popular tourist hub  for both travel and entertainment,  the official languages are both Cantonese Chinese and Portuguese.
